All Politics is Local When the Candidate Supports White Supremacists

Tom Kean Jr. has been in office for 19 years and is the son of a revered New Jersey governor, which means he’s effectively lived his entire life in politics. So how’d he not know he was fundraising for a white supremacist town council candidate in #Garwood? (links below) Answer: incompetence, it’s who he expects his supports to be, or both. Kean’s name is on the fundraiser invitation, which is sponsored by the Union County GOP, and posed with the candidate while he wore a Trump 2020 hat. In public social media posts this candidate posted: “Some of us aren’t okay with teaching kids homosexual history,” “It’s okay to be white,” and mocked George Floyd’s death. The town council candidate’s name is Jesse Wilson but used the name ‘Jerome Biggums’ on Facebook.

The No-Plan Man

Tom Kean Jr. cannot be trusted to protect our State and Nation’s gun laws. His inconsistent voting record and lack of leadership with regards to sensible gun legislation are consistent with current Republican leadership which continues to fail to protect our citizens from the gun violence epidemic.

Just Another Milquetoast!

The Republican’s plan for NJ07 in November is to try to convince the electorate to let go of the substance that is Tom Malinowski for the shadow that is Tom Kean, Jr.  As usual, they want JAM on it. What’s JAM? Just Another Milquetoast, another in the line of NJ07 Representatives that go back through Leonard Lance to Mike Ferguson.

Black Lives Matters Somerville Protest - by Donna Gioia Volpe

Photographer Donna Gioia Volpe has been attending and documenting the weekly Black Lives Matter protests in her town of Somerville throughout the month of June, as young activists take to the streets and demand change. Attendees gather at the old Somerset County Courthouse, march up Main Street, around Town Hall, and then back to the Courthouse to hear speakers and others inform and educate the crowd. This is what democracy looks like.

All Politics is Local

I submitted a Letter to the Editor, originally published on 6/30, that included the following statement made by me: “Tom Kean (State Senator running for Congress in our district) is always polite and pleasant to me, and I’ve often heard the refrain “but he’s so nice” echoed by friends. Yet, his recent voting record shows he’s a homophobe who would strip us of our rights tomorrow.”

Tom Kean's Values

Tom Kean Jr. likes to talk about "values," about bringing New Jersey "values" to Washington. It's astonishing, therefore, that he continues to sit by silently while not only New Jersey values but American values are under assault. Is it an American value to encourage a dictator to build concentration camps for an ethnic minority? Is it an American value to beg an authoritarian leader to interfere in our elections? Is it an American value to tear gas and physically abuse peaceful protesters just

The Prevarications of Modern Society

Many of you will agree that we are living in a time of plague and disease, and it's laid bare the prevarications of modern society and its loftily-stated intentions of providing for the welfare of all citizens, near and far. The burden of disease falls most harshly on those least able to protect against it, namely people of color and the elderly, and its opportunistic nature on morbidity tears back the blinders of any belief in our ability to protect ourselves…or anyone else…from the scourge of disease and the ravages of death.  A plague that brings infectious disease also exposes the strength or weakness of any systematic effort to combat its wrath, and it enforces the need to isolate so as not to contaminate.  However, isolation is separation, and fear & anxiety grow in the darkness that has been overtaking America during the age of pandemic.

What’s In a Name?

Tom Kean, Jr. would like you to vote for him based on his family name. Want to research his position on issues you care about? You won’t find it on his website. You can give him your email address, you can give him your dollars, but what you can’t give him is an examination of his record. Is it because he’s trying to run on the moderate reputation of his father? Or is it because he doesn’t want you to look at his voting record in the NJ Senate?

Pride in a Pandemic

There’s no doubt that this month’s Pride Month is profoundly different from others. On June 15, in a 6-3 majority, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that Title VII, a provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, protects LGBTQ employees from discrimination in the workplace on the basis of sex. As a gay woman, this decision will have profound impacts on my life. While I cannot help but feel proud of advancements towards equality for our community, it is pertinent to understand that our work is far from over.

Kean Jr. Is Out of Step on LGBTQ Rights

“I still believe that marriage is and should be between one man and one woman and I would support an amendment to the state constitution reaffirming that definition.” - Tom Kean Jr. America takes giant steps forward in guaranteeing LGBTQ rights and where are the Republican Party and Tom Kean Jr.? The US Supreme Court this week handed down with an historic decision that effectively bans discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community in the workplace.  The day before the decision was announced, you could get married on Sunday and fired on Monday in 28 states. That is now not true in any state in the United States.
