“We support protecting net neutrality. Over the past decades, the Internet has served as a great equalizer, an opportunity for small businesses and voices who may not otherwise have a platform to compete in the market alongside big corporations and other powerful entities. Widespread access and net neutrality have been essential for providing every American a better chance to succeed in the face of rising income inequality and corporate gains that only go to the top.

Repealing net neutrality is a threat to both market competitiveness and freedom of speech. Without net neutrality, corporations and other powerful entities will be able to stifle competition and restrict access to speech they disagree with.”

FASCISM 101 – REPEAL NET NEUTRALITY
December 15, 2017

“On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission voted 3-2 to repeal Net Neutrality – the principle that Internet Service Providers must treat all data the same without charging more, or slowing down users and content.

After taking nearly $300,000 from the big telecom industries, our very own NJ-7 (un)Representative was one of 107 Republican members of Congress to sign onto a letter requesting that the FCC repeal Net Neutrality.

The attack on Net Neutrality is just yet another assault on the American people by The Trump administration, the Republican Party, and their billionaire robber baron overlords.

What is the first chapter in the dictator’s handbook? Control the information. By attacking net neutrality, they control the internet; by attacking public schools, they control education; by attacking the press, they control the news. It’s fascism 101, and we’ve got a front row seat in the classroom. My question to you is, are you ready to stand up and fight back?”

2018 - supported FCC elimination of Net Neutrality protections via letter to FCC. This letter was written by Greg Walden, Chair of the Committee on Energy and Commerce and Marsha Blackburn, Chair of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. Leonard Lance is Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology.

"Wednesday afternoon, 107 Republican members of Congress sent Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai a letter supporting his plan to repeal net neutrality protections ahead of the commission’s Thursday vote.

“The record is exhaustive, every viewpoint is well represented, and the time has come for the Commission to act,” the letter says. The current regulations, of course, are widely popular with the American people, and there have been widespread public protests urging the FCC to keep the protections in place.

The House Committee on Energy and Commerce and its Subcommittee on Communications and Technology released the letter, and it is signed by 107 lawmakers. Many of their signatures are illegible, and the committee did not release a typed list of the members who signed it. A call to the committee was not immediately returned."

"Of the 239 Republicans in the US House of Representatives, only 107 added their names to a letter released this morning supporting FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s plan to repeal net neutrality rules.

If we can figure out the names of the 107 GOP lawmakers who signed the letter, then we can find out who the 132 are who didn’t—and ask them why.

Perhaps the mysterious 132 are concerned about the recent study that showed an overwhelming majority of Republican voters aren’t in favor of Pai’s proposal. Maybe they’ve come to understand that repealing the net neutrality rules would give ISPs immense power while stripping the federal government’s ability to prevent the censorship and discrimination of online services. Maybe they were just out for coffee.

We may never know."

Public Statements

2010 - Opposed proposal of Net Neutrality protections

"I strongly oppose today's decision by the FCC to regulate the Internet. The Internet is a medium that is experiencing tremendous technological growth and today's action on net neutrality will harm consumers, reduce competition and discourage new investment and innovation in broadband. I fully expect the new House majority to address this issue next year and look forward to being part of that effort."

2014 - Hailed court decision to strike down Net Neutrality protections

“The Internet is a medium that continues to experience tremendous technological growth and today's action by the D.C. Circuit Court striking down the FCC’s efforts to regulate the Internet protects consumers, increases competition and encourages new investment and innovation in broadband. As a member of the House Communications and Technology Subcommittee I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure that the FCC does not overstep its authority on the issue of network neutrality.”

2014 - Opposed FCC enactment of Net Neutrality protections

“The FCC’s rules proposal to regulate the Internet will hurt consumers and discourage new investment and innovation in broadband. It should be Congress, not an unelected federal commission, that is tasked in modernizing our Nation’s telecommunications laws As a member of the House Communications and Technology Subcommittee I look forward to a vigorous discussion with Chairman Wheeler next week on what I consider to be a gross overstep in authority on the issue of network neutrality.”

2015 - Opposed FCC creation of Net Neutrality protections

"The Federal Communications Commission has voted in favor of a net neutrality plan that is the most dramatic government intervention in the Internet in two decades. The FCC’s proposal to regulate the Internet will hurt consumers and discourage new investment and innovation in broadband. It is Congress, not an unelected federal commission, that is tasked with modernizing our Nation’s telecommunications laws and today’s action is a blatant overstep of authority that threatens to stifle one of the Nation’s most important economic engines."

2018 - Supported FCC elimination of Net Neutrality protections via letter to FCC

“We write today in support of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) plan to restore Internet freedom by reversing the prior Commission’s decision to regulate broadband Internet service under Title II of the Communications Act, a statutory scheme created for the monopoly telephone carriers of a bygone era. This proposal is a major step forward in the effort to clear the way for the substantial investment necessary to advance our Internet architecture for the next generation and close the digital divide. When its effects are fully realized, more Americans than ever will experience the benefits of telemedicine, distance learning, streaming video, and future innovations made possible by broadband.”

“Leonard Lance is heavily dependent on corporations to finance his campaigns. It’s no wonder he led the charge in Congress to end Net Neutrality; a move that will lead to windfall profits for the telecom industry at the expense of his constituents here in CD7.”

“Lance is the Vice Chairman of a critical subcommittee that regulates electronic commerce in the United States – this is the one position of influence he holds in the House of Representatives — and the recipient of over $290,000 in campaign contributions from the telecommunications industry. So he has his own questions to answer. For example, why did he lead the charge last year to end Net Neutrality, which further entrenched the power of the companies that control access to the internet? Why did he vote to kill privacy rules that once prevented internet service providers like Verizon from selling our personal data to the highest bidder? Can he point to a single initiative he has led to strengthen the privacy of Americans online? Has even wrestled with the challenge of whether and how to regulate online companies in light of the lessons we’ve learned from the 2016 elections, and the growing polarization of our politics?”
